Retro Message: Behind the Scene

What’s happening with the new retro message app?  Well as a digital art and digital video pioneer these classic old movie clips, or “stock footage” from way back, are a treasure chest of historical significance. I have learned how these classic old movie clips have delivered many smiles on many faces.

Serious creative fun for everyone is how I look at the retro message app.

From the darkest corner of my garage these vintage 16mm black and white clips turned out to be amazing! I dug up my old vintage movie projector and was able to preview a handful of these film nuggets from the late 1940’s and early 50’s.

They were MOS, or films waiting for a soundtrack. MOS stands for broken English “mit ohne sound”, that is, “without sound” I saw them waiting for more. They were the perfect medium to pair with the unique individual expression of the written word. My creativity was ignited.

The retro message concept was born.

However the current smartphones of the day were not able to play movies very well or at all at the time. This was prior to the release of the first iPhone. Very few handsets were available that could play some form of low quality digital video, but the ability to combine a personal message and an audio film score soundtrack was not there yet for consumers or software developers.

I was convinced these old 16mm films were brilliant evidence of filmmaking quality way back in the late 40’s and early 50’s and they deserve a new home and should be shared with anyone with a current smartphone that could play quality video and audio. Hence our mission statement ~  retro message is dedicated to the early pioneers of filmmaking–and the filmmaker in all of us. Yes, you are a filmmaker with a retro message!

Retro messages really do deliver fun creative communications. As an example, one of our very early adopter-beta testers found when sending her retro message to two of her sisters they both experienced an emotional retro message moment because their sister selected ‘child’s play’ with the two girls playing with their dolls in their backyard. This retro message brought memories of when they would play as little kids and trying to find the hidden roller skate key for their roller skates. She stated she is not using the online greeting card company any longer because of the amazing reaction her sisters spoke about.

The creative message capabilities embrace your personal touch that is endless, with new retro message clips being added to the app monthly growing the retro message library. You will find an amazing selection to preview, select, and a film score soundtrack, preview it, and send out.

We are seeing that our retro message digital film library content enables continuous creativity, a joyful response, with happy inspirational smiles every time.

Don’t just text messages when you can retro message! Enjoy.

Please let us know of any questions or thoughts you may have.

  1. Just curious if you found any old clips from Black Hollywood or Bollywood. Asking from a cultural perspective: I am starting to customize my messages and emoji’s with dark tan and brown skin. It is so hard to find new innovative tech products that feature black & brown characters, unless made by a black or brown developer.

    • Hello, sorry for the delayed reply. Our film library is from the original 16mm motion picture footage shot in the late 1940’s. What you see is what we have. Please let us know if we can answer any other questions.
      Thank you. -scott
